COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — The Associated Press has found that lawyers, law firms and a lobbyist with a business stake at Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine's office have contributed to a charity important to the Republican and his family.
Hands Together hosts the Becky DeWine School in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. It's named for DeWine's daughter, who died in a 1993 car crash.
Federal filings show donations to DeWine fundraising events benefiting the school roughly doubled after DeWine took office.
Donors self-reported by the charity include individual law firms, along with an Ohio lobbyist and two of his clients that won lucrative special-counsel work with the state.
DeWine said his charity work is integral in his life and some donors may overlap with his political campaigns. He said neither type of donation affects his business decisions.
