COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Veterans Affairs Acting Secretary Sloan Gibson is scheduled to meet with leaders and employees at the William Jennings Bryan Dorn VA Medical Center in Columbia.
VA spokeswoman Evetta Gregg says Wednesday's visit will include Medical Center Director Timothy McMurry.
The Dorn Center has been hit with reports of delays in patient care as have other Veterans Administration hospitals across the country.
A Department of Veterans Affairs audit in June showed that patients seeking care at Dorn waited an average of 77 days for their first appointment with a primary care doctor — more than five times longer than the department's goal.
Last year, the VA's inspector general found delayed screenings for colorectal cancer were linked to dozens of malignancies and six deaths.
