Containment increases on California wildfire

WINTERS, Calif. (AP) — Nearly 2,000 firefighters are getting the upper hand on a wildfire in rugged and steep terrain in rural Northern California.

State fire spokesman Dennis Mathisen said the Monticello Fire near Lake Berryessa in Yolo County was 55 percent as of Tuesday morning, up 10 percent from the previous night.

The fire, which has burned about 10 square miles, didn't grow overnight.

The fire has been fueled by gusty winds and thick, brittle brush. Temperatures have also been high.

In eastern Nevada and southwestern Utah, firefighters increased containment of several wildfires covering a combined 33 square miles of desert rangeland.

No homes or other structures were threatened by a 9,100-acre fire about 60 miles north of Ely, or a trio of fires being managed as a complex.
