LOS ANGELES (AP) — Civil libertarians are calling on the California Highway Patrol to conduct a full investigation into an officer who was videotaped repeatedly punching a woman on the side of a Los Angeles freeway.
The CHP says the woman was walking on the freeway, endangering herself and others, and the officer was trying to restrain her.
Hector Villagra, who heads the ACLU of Southern California, says officers can only use force when reasonably necessary and the video raises serious questions.
Attorney Caree Harper says she plans to file a lawsuit on behalf of 51-year-old Marlene Pinnock in the coming days.
CHP Sgt. Denise Joslin wouldn't identify the officer but says he's on desk duty during their investigation. She says a CHP commissioner will discuss the process with community leaders Tuesday.
