PROCTORVILLE, Ohio (AP) — Authorities suspect that a house fire that killed a couple in southern Ohio may have been sparked by illegal use of fireworks in the area.
The state fire marshal's office said in a statement Saturday that a man and woman, both in their 70s, were killed in the fire reported about 1:30 a.m. Saturday in Proctorville.
Investigators believe hot embers from illegal aerial fireworks fell into combustible material at the back of the house. The state fire marshal's office says debris from fireworks was found in the neighborhood.
Witnesses said the man came out of the home, but went back inside to try to rescue his bedridden wife.
Investigators are asking anyone with information that may assist their investigation to contact the state fire marshal's office.
