Perry's monument on Lake Erie island vandalized

PUT-IN-BAY, Ohio (AP) — Police on South Bass Island say vandals damaged benches and signs around the Lake Erie island's landmark monument.

Authorities also say they discovered that several trash cans had been tipped over and that garbage littered the lawn surrounding the 350-foot tall Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial on the island in northern Ohio.

Put-in-Bay police say the damage was found Sunday morning by an employee at Perry's monument. Police say two granite benches were tipped over, too.

The monument commemorates a key victory in the War of 1812. It underwent an extensive three-year renovation that was completed two years ago.
