Man sentenced in saw attack on Ohio officer

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A man who attacked a central Ohio police officer with a saw and also admitted to raping a child years ago has been sentenced to 15 years in prison.

The judge in Columbus sentenced 23-year-old Donivin Cunningham on Thursday after he pleaded guilty to felonious assault and two counts of rape.

Police say Cunningham attacked a Columbus police sergeant with a large saw in April 2013, causing injuries that required treatment at a hospital. Officers were responding to a report that he had fired a gun at the mother of his two children.

The Columbus Dispatch (http://bit.ly/1nLdlX3 ) reports that the rape counts involved the assault of a young relative seven to 10 years ago. The victim disclosed the assaults only last year.

Cunningham's attorney says the defendant is "very remorseful."
