St. Jude Children's Research Hospital names CEO

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — St. Jude Children's Research Hospital has named Dr. James R. Downing as its new CEO.

The Memphis hospital said Wednesday that Downing will assume CEO duties on July 15.

Downing most recently has served as the deputy director, executive vice president and scientific director. He succeeds Dr. William E. Evans, who is retiring from the position after 10 years and returning to his pharmacogenomics research program at St. Jude.

Downing will be the hospital's sixth CEO since it opened in 1962. He has worked on genome sequencing, overseeing the Pediatric Cancer Genome Project.

The hospital is a leader in treating and defeating pediatric cancer and other catastrophic diseases.
