Group drops lawsuit over prevented organ donation

SAGINAW, Mich. (AP) — An organ donation group has dropped its lawsuit against a Michigan coroner filed after the organs, tissues and eyes of a slain 6-year-old boy were unable to be used for transplant.

The Saginaw News reports (http://bit.ly/1pNQWve ) Wednesday that Gift of Life of Michigan dropped its suit against Saginaw County medical examiner Dr. Kanu Virani because it said "court action is no longer necessary." Virani resigned from his position as of June 1, and said Gift of Life was the "major reason."

The group claimed Virani took too long to perform an autopsy on Elijah Dillard's body. He had been burned and beaten in February.

Virani has said he "had no choice but to say no" to procuring the boy's organs.

A lawsuit continues against the county.
