Eaton Rapids to bring therapy dog into district

EATON RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) — A yellow Labrador retriever will join the staff of Eaton Rapids Public Schools in the fall.

The Lansing State Journal reports ( ) that 18-month-old Jazz recently toured Greyhound Elementary School with trainer Mike Morgan of Mid-Michigan Kennels and her soon-to-be handler Brent Watkins. The Eaton Rapids Board of Education voted in May to bring in the therapy dog.

Watkins is the district's special education director. Jazz will live and work with him. District officials see the dog as a calming influence on students who need it and a defense against illegal substances in district buildings.

Jazz's training, care and medical costs are being donated to the district by Morgan.
