Ohio memorial set for US doctor killed in Pakistan

GROVEPORT, Ohio (AP) — A memorial is being held in central Ohio for an American cardiologist killed last month in Pakistan in front of his wife and toddler son.

Police say two gunmen riding a motorcycle shot Mehdi Ali Qamar (meh-dee ah-LEE' kuh-MER') as his family left a cemetery after visiting relatives' graves. He was from the minority Ahmadi (ah-mah-DEE') sect.

He worked and lived in central Ohio. A statement from the Ahmadiyaa Muslim Community in Columbus said his colleagues were among those expected to attend his Saturday evening memorial at a mosque in Groveport, southeast of Columbus.

The statement says thousands of people attended his funeral two weeks ago in Toronto. Qamar had dual U.S. and Canadian citizenship.

Qamar's wife and son were not harmed. He is survived by two other sons.
