AUBURN, Ala. (AP) — Auburn University officials say an eagle that once soared over home football games has died at age 34.
University officials said in a statement Wednesday that Tiger — known as War Eagle VI — was the first to fly free during home football games at Jordan-Hare Stadium. Officials say Tiger retired after her 2006 flight over the Auburn-Georgia game.
University officials say Tiger underwent surgery for a cataract in her left eye Tuesday and veterinarians determined more surgery was necessary. Dr. James Bellah, director of the Southeastern Raptor Center said Tiger risked complete vision loss without additional surgery.
Bellah says the bird made it through surgery and appeared to be recovering, but died overnight.
Officials say a necropsy has been requested and plans for a memorial service are pending.
