KENT, Ohio (AP) — A fire official says six children and two adults were taken to hospitals from a northeast Ohio school for the developmentally disabled after an excessive amount of chlorine leaked into a swimming pool.
Lt. Patrick Edwards of the Kent Fire Department says two staffers and five children also were treated at the scene. None of the injuries are life-threatening.
The incident occurred shortly before 1 p.m. Tuesday at Happy Day School in Kent. The school, about 40 miles southeast of Cleveland, provides special education services.
Edwards says the children and staff members reported becoming ill after a pool pump was restarted and an excessive amount of chlorine got into the pool. He says the excess chlorine quickly dissolved.
Rescue squads from nine departments were sent to the school.
