PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The parents of a teenager who fatally shot a classmate at an Oregon school are apologizing for their son's actions.
In a letter delivered to Portland television station KPTV, Michael Padgett says he and his ex-wife Kristina are "horrified and distraught" by the violence committed by their son, Jared.
They say they never promoted hatred, and they taught their children compassion, forgiveness, patience and love in Jesus Christ.
Police say 15-year-old freshman Jared Padgett shot 14-year-old Emilio Hoffman at Reynolds High School in Troutdale before killing himself.
Padgett's parents apologized to Hoffman's family, the teacher who was grazed by a bullet, and the entire community.
