DOVER, Del. (AP) — Officials say the emergency closing of an interstate bridge in Delaware because some support columns are tilted could mean headaches for motorists on the congested Interstate 95 corridor through the Mid-Atlantic region.
Delware officials ordered the closing Monday of the Interstate 495 bridge over the Christina River in Wilmington, Delaware, after discovering four supporting columns were tilting.
Delaware Transportation Secretary Shailen Bhatt says motorists and particularly truckers from Florida to Maine are being advised. Bhatt says it's not yet clear how long the bridge will be closed.
The 4,800-foot bridge normally carries about 90,000 vehicles a day on I-495, which diverts traffic around Wilmington. The route parallels Interstate 95, which runs through downtown Wilmington and is congested in rush hour.
