ERIE, Pa. (AP) — The Erie Shriners clinic has received the largest gift in its history, a $7.375 million donation from the estate of an Ohio businessman who also gave the same amount to a Shriners medical facility in Cincinnati.
The Erie Times-News (http://bit.ly/1nKGeXQ) reports Tuesday that the bequest is from Fred Burchfield, of Sebring, Ohio. Sebring owned a car dealership, a lumber business and a retail store before he died three years ago at age 96. His estate recently settled.
The 87-year-old facility was formerly known as the Erie Shriners Hospital for Children. It was repurposed and renamed the Erie Shriners Ambulatory Surgery Center and Outpatient Specialty Care Center two years ago. That change was made to save the facility, which had been one of six Shriners hospitals that the group proposed closing in 2009.
