ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — The twin sisters who participated in Michigan's first kidney transplant plan to be on hand to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the University of Michigan Transplant Center.
Janice Ottenbacher Schroeder and Joan Ottenbacher Teltow are expected to join more than 500 people Sunday afternoon at Ann Arbor's Crisler Center to mark the milestone. The sisters as well as other university officials are scheduled to speak at the ice cream social that's free to the public.
The identical twins were 15 in 1964 when they underwent the transplant at the university hospital. Teltow was the donor and Schroeder was the recipient.
The center has performed about 10,000 organ transplants, more than 1,000 of which were for pediatric patients. It's one of the nation's oldest and largest transplant centers.
