School, tax policy changes near Ohio Senate votes

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — The Ohio Senate is expected to vote Wednesday on a package of tax breaks proposed by Gov. John Kasich (KAY'-sik) and along with a plan that asserts the role of local school districts in implementing Ohio's new learning standards.

Four separate midterm budget bills cleared committees Tuesday.

One measure incorporated a package of tax changes backed by Kasich that accelerates a planned income-tax cut and expands certain exemptions and credits. His plan would also boost proposed small business income-tax reductions to 75 percent from 50 percent for tax year 2014.

Another bill delivers a one-year reprieve to school districts and teachers from sanctions tied to new learning and teacher evaluation standards. It also safeguards the collection and dissemination of certain student information.
