ABERDEEN, S.D. (AP) — Basketball coach Don Meyer (MY'-er) is under hospice care at home, but some of his core principles will live on in a cancer center that will bear his name and that of his wife.
The Don and Carmen Meyer Center of Excellence at Avera St. Luke's Hospital in Aberdeen will house the Avera Cancer Institute.
The couple and Gov. Dennis Daugaard launched the fundraising effort for the project last month.
The $13.5 million, 26,000 square foot building will provide care and expanded services for not just patients but also caregivers.
Groundbreaking is set for late summer.
Hospital president Todd Forkel says there will be a wall with photos of Meyer and video of him sharing messages of faith and perseverance that should encourage people fighting cancer.
