HONOLULU (AP) — An underwater scuffle between two scuba divers off Hawaii is highlighting a long-running conflict over the aquarium fish industry.
The dispute pits environmentalists who want to shut down the industry in Hawaii and collectors who gather aquarium fish and sell them for a living.
Video released this week by environmentalists shows a diver ripping the air supply regulator out of the mouth of activist Rene Umberger, who is filming him.
Umberger says she retrieved the regulator and resumed breathing but says the act could have killed a less experienced diver.
The state Department of Land and Natural Resources, which oversees state waters, says it is investigating "complaints by two parties involved in an incident" but declined to provide further details.
