LaSPCA: reward in pregnant rabbit cruelty case

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The Louisiana SPCA says somebody threw two pregnant rabbits from a car window in Metairie, breaking both rear legs on one rabbit and one rear leg on the other.

It's offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the person's arrest and conviction.

SPCA spokeswoman Alicia Haefele (HAY-fuh-lee) says a woman brought the rabbits to Metairie veterinarian Gregory Rich after seeing them thrown from the car Tuesday in Lafreniere (LAFF-ruh-NYEHR) Park.

Jefferson Parish President John Young says the woman told Jefferson SPCA investigators she could not remember the car's license plate or identify the occupant.

Haefele says this could be prosecuted as aggravated cruelty to animals, a felony carrying at least a year in prison and a $5,000 fine, and up to 10 years and a $25,000 fine.
