BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (AP) — The family of a college student killed in a car crash last month is being honored for his organ donation.
Secretary of State Jesse White presented the family of Michael Collins with a commemorative license plate at a ceremony at Illinois State University on Monday. The family also received Collins' college diploma. He was killed in a crash involving an alleged drunk driver last month.
Michael Collins' mother, Kelly, says her son's organ donation is helping more than 200 people. She says a New York woman's vision was restored because of his donation.
ISU President Larry Dietz says the school will increase its drunken driving education and awareness efforts. He applauded Collins for choosing to ride with a designated driver.
Collins was to receive a degree in kinesiology and recreation.
