2 in Providence attacked by apparent rabid raccoon

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Two people in Providence have been attacked by what police say is an apparently rabid raccoon that remains on the loose.

Police got the first call around 6:30 a.m. Wednesday, after a 16-year-old girl was bitten.

The second call came in about an hour later, at 7:25 a.m., from around five blocks away. In that attack, a woman said an animal she couldn't identify lunged at a woman's face and bit her hand.

Both the teenager and the woman went to hospitals and are being treated for exposure to rabies.

Animal control says while the raccoon will likely die within 24 to 48 hours, officials are concerned it might expose other animals.

Anyone who sees the raccoon is asked to call police.
