Orange County reports 10th case of rabies in 2014

HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. (AP) — Orange County Animal Services has recorded the tenth positive test for rabies, just two short of the total for all of 2013 and the year before.

The department says the case originated last Saturday when a Hillsborough resident spotted a raccoon outside her house that appeared to be ill. The woman removed her dogs from the courtyard, and then called 911 to reach an animal control officer.

The raccoon was removed from the home for rabies testing.

Although the two dogs involved in this case were currently vaccinated against rabies, they will receive a booster shot in accordance to North Carolina law.
