California mom arrested in baby's fatal stabbing

LIVERMORE, Calif. (AP) — A police official says a young mother has been arrested in California on suspicion of stabbing her infant to death after first attempting suicide at a popular park.

Officers responding to reports of a car collision Saturday at Del Valle Regional Park east of San Francisco found the mother carrying her baby's lifeless body in her arms. The woman also had a laceration to her body.

The Contra Costa Times reports (http://bit.ly/1hzyVgJ ) the woman in her early 20s was arrested on suspicion of murder. Her name wasn't immediately released.

A pocket knife was found at the scene.

East Bay Regional Park District Police Chief Timothy Anderson said the woman was believed to have depression.

There were conflicting reports on the baby's age and sex. A call to Anderson wasn't immediately returned.
