Rhode Island holding drug take-back events

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Law enforcement officials in Rhode Island are holding another statewide event intended to help residents dispose of their unused or expired prescription drugs safely.

Medications can be dropped off Saturday at many locations across the state, including police departments in Providence, Pawtucket, Warwick and Newport. Some communities are accepting drop-offs at local pharmacies. They are done anonymously.

The event is being held as part of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration's National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day. Officials say 3.4 million pounds of pills have been turned in nationwide since 2010.

Attorney General Peter Kilmartin says prescription drug abuse is an epidemic and can often lead to the use of illicit drugs like heroin. He says there has been a great local response to previous take-back events.
