Rauner to visit Centralia Developmental Center

CENTRALIA, Ill. (AP) — GOP candidate for governor Bruce Rauner plans to visit a center for the developmentally disabled in Centralia, highlighting his concerns over the pending closure of the facility.

The Winnetka businessman is facing Gov. Pat Quinn in the November election. Quinn is a Chicago Democrat who has supported closing some state-run institutions, including the Murray Developmental Center, and transferring disabled residents into community-based care.

Murray was scheduled for closure last year. But parents and advocates for the developmentally disabled are waging a court battle to keep the center open.

Rauner's spokesman says he has "concerns about families having a choice in the care of their loved ones."

Rauner is scheduled to meet with center parents and employees before attending a fundraiser for Murray afterward.
