Group says slow autopsy prevented organ donation

SAGINAW, Mich. (AP) — Gift of Life Michigan is suing Saginaw County medical examiner Dr. Kanu Virani, saying he took too long to perform an autopsy which prevented the donation of organs from a slain 6-year-old boy.

The Saginaw News reports (http://bit.ly/1roE38M ) Thursday that the lawsuit says Virani violated state law requiring a timely autopsy allowing Elijah Dillard's organs, tissues and eyes to remain viable for transplant.

Virani says police told him Elijah was beaten and he had to examine the entire body because he "did not know what organs were injured."

Aki Dillard is charged with murder in his son's slaying.

Elijah was kept on a ventilator after his March 1 death. Gift of Life Michigan says the organs could not be used once the body was removed from the ventilator.
