La. company settles Medicare fraud allegations

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — A Louisiana-based home healthcare company will pay $150 million to settle allegations that it submitted false bills to the federal Medicare program.

Federal prosecutors in Birmingham said Wednesday that the settlement was in response to allegations that Amedisys, Inc. and its affiliates billed Medicare for nursing and therapy sessions provided to ineligible patients, pressured employees to provide those sessions and made improper payments to doctor for referring patients.

Seven whistleblower lawsuits will be resolved under the settlement, including one in Georgia and six in Pennsylvania. Federal prosecutors say that the whistleblowers pursuing those suits will split about $26 million.
