PHOENIX (AP) — An inmate with breast cancer has been released from a Phoenix jail in order to receive life-saving surgery.
Ruth Alvarez walked out of the Lower Buckeye Jail on Thursday morning after agreeing to a plea deal with Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery.
Alvarez says she is very thankful and has been praying for this moment.
Alvarez, who is living in the country illegally, was arrested April 1 for allegedly using someone else's identity to obtain work.
Prosecutors say she pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge and will serve a year of probation.
She was scheduled to undergo a mastectomy April 23, which will go on as planned.
Defense attorney Jose Penalosa says Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials also agreed to not detain her.
