BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — The Louisiana Senate has supported Gov. Bobby Jindal's plan to shutter the LSU public hospital in Pineville and shift its services to two nearby private hospitals.
Backing came in a 26-11 vote Tuesday. The legislation by Republican Sen. Gerald Long moves to the House for consideration.
Jindal wants to close Huey P. Long Medical Center and move its services to CHRISTUS St. Frances Cabrini Hospital and Rapides Regional Medical Center.
Long says the privatization deal would provide better care for uninsured people in the region.
But Sen. Rick Gallot, a Democrat whose district contains the hospital, says the Jindal administration is moving too quickly, with outstanding questions about whether promised outpatient clinics will be open when the LSU hospital closes.
