TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Hillsborough County Animal Services officials say they've placed a veterinarian on administrative leave after failing to take action when a dog was brought to the facility in distressed labor.
Officials say an animal services officer brought the pregnant dog to the shelter on Saturday but the on-duty veterinarian didn't take any action. On Sunday, staff members saw the dog had given birth, but her puppy had died.
Another veterinarian determined that the dog would have to be euthanized because of her poor condition.
In a statement, the department said appropriate action will be taken following an investigation.
Hillsborough County officials have been trying to revamp operations at the shelter following complaints from animal rights group. Officials hired Scott Trebatoski, who helped turn around the Jacksonville animal shelter.
