KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A northwest Missouri community is rallying behind the family of a 5-month-old boy whose cancer battle has inspired thousands to jump into cold bodies of water — from local farm ponds to the Gulf of Mexico and even the Potomac River in Washington, D.C.
Landon Shaw was diagnosed in February with a rare form of cancer and has undergone four surgeries to remove tumors from his kidneys and brain. The Tarkio infant's mother says doctors didn't expect him to survive, but he gained strength and went home April 1.
Former Tarkio resident Lora Cummins is an ordained minister and beach body coach in Port Aransas, Texas. Challenged by high school ex-classmates, she jumped Wednesday into the Gulf of Mexico.
As of Friday evening, more than $30,000 was donated.
