Some North Adams hospital employees rehired

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. (AP) — Officials working to revive medical services at the former North Adams Regional Hospital say 75 former employees have been rehired for an emergency care center.

The announcement Tuesday followed a day of meetings involving state and local officials and a Berkshire Medical Center team.

Gov. Deval Patrick, who met with lawmakers from the region, said it was unclear which services would be restored, but said officials are working with Berkshire Medical Center to reopen the emergency room, the Visiting Nurses Association program and hospice services.

The hospital closed down unexpectedly last month, citing financial problems. More than 500 people were put out of work and patients across northern Berkshire County wondered where they would get medical care.

Attorney General Martha Coakley, a North Adams native, is investigating the sudden closure.
