SAO PAULO (AP) — The Health Ministry says a Cuban doctor sent to work in impoverished areas apparently committed suicide in Brazil's capital.
A ministry official said Tuesday the body of the 52-year-old doctor was found in his hotel room on Monday "and everything indicates he committed suicide since a rolled up bedsheet was found twisted around his neck."
The official declined to be identified because he was not authorized to speak to the press. He did not give further details
The doctor's name was not revealed and phone calls to the Cuban embassy for comment and details went unanswered.
He was one of more than 7,000 Cuban doctors participating in Brazil's "More Doctors" program to get physicians working in areas where doctors and medical services are scarce.
