AKRON, Ohio (AP) — An Akron man has been sentenced to life in prison in the killing of a former high school football star during a robbery last summer.
A Summit County Common Pleas Court judge handed down the sentence to 26-year-old Tony Deon Gray Jr. on Friday, even though he didn't pull the trigger.
The Akron Beacon Journal reports (http://bit.ly/1lwaxzz) that Gray could have avoided the life sentence had he not rejected a plea deal that would have guaranteed his release from prison in as few as 10 years.
Former Ellet High School football star Paris Wicks II was fatally shot behind a store in August when he tried to help a friend who was being robbed.
Prosecutors convinced jurors that Gray was complicit in the murder by helping the shooter get away.
