NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — The Navy says a sailor was shot and killed aboard a guided-missile destroyer docked at Naval Station Norfolk in Virginia last night, and security forces then killed the civilian suspected of being the shooter.
A base spokeswoman couldn't say whether the suspect had permission to be aboard the ship or on the base and would not describe the circumstances of the shooting.
No other injuries were reported, but the base was briefly put on lockdown after the shooting. Operations have since returned to normal, but enlisted sailors on the destroyer are being told not to report to duty.
The shooting on the USS Mahan comes about a month after the Navy held anti-terrorism and force protection exercises around the world, including an active-shooter drill at the Norfolk base.
