Northern California sheriff's deputy fatally shot

CLEONE, Calif. (AP) — The suspect in a shootout that killed a Northern California sheriff's deputy Wednesday did not commit suicide as authorities had previously reported, but was killed by a police officer.

Mendocino County Sheriff Tom Allman told KTVU-TV on Wednesday evening that initial reports that the suspect, Ricardo Anthony Chaney, had been killed in the shootout rather than taking his own life.

The shooting occurred just north of Fort Bragg in Cleone, a rural area that is a mix of homes, forest and open fields, at around noon on Wednesday.

Sheriff's Deputy Ricky Del Fiorentino was in pursuit of the suspect who was suspected of stealing a BMW in Oregon and locking the car's original occupants in the trunk.
