NE Ohio judge resigns after home, office searches

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (AP) — A northeast Ohio judge whose office and residence were searched by authorities last month has resigned.

Mahoning County Probate Judge Mark Belinky sent resignation letters Friday to Republican Gov. John Kasich (KAY'-sik) and Chief Justice Maureen O'Connor.

Belinky told The Vindicator of Youngstown (http://bit.ly/1fKsFCc ) he was disappointed to step down but believes it's in his best interest and that of his family.

Agents from the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation, FBI and county sheriff's office searched Belinky's Youngstown office and Boardman home Feb. 7. Search warrants listed potential charges including engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity, tampering with records, bribery, money laundering and theft in office.

He was not been charged.

Kasich will pick a successor to serve the remainder of Belinky's term, which expires in January 2015.
