SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The Utah Legislature has approved a measure aiming to prevent youth suicides.
The Senate voted 22-4 Thursday to approve the bill that would give gun owners information on how to store their weapons away from children and teens. It now advances to the governor for final approval.
The measure would provide brochures and pamphlets detailing that many suicide attempts by minors involve a gun belonging to a parent or family member, among other statistics.
Bill sponsor Sandy Republican Rep. Steve Eliason says he hopes the measure will prevent tragedies.
The information would go over how to store the weapons in gun safes and how to use cable gun locks. It would go to Utah residents who apply for concealed carry permits.
The applicants would also receive coupons for gun safes.
