TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — Ohio Turnpike officials are stopping drivers from getting on the toll road at several interchanges after a series of pileups shut it down.
The State Highway Patrol says two people died and a trooper was seriously injured in snowy crashes involving at least 50 vehicles on the turnpike.
A turnpike spokesman says they hope to open one eastbound lane of traffic around 6 p.m.
Pileups stretched across a 2-mile section in the eastbound lanes of the toll road Wednesday afternoon between Toledo and Cleveland.
Turnpike spokesman Adam Greenslade says traffic there is backed up just over seven miles.
Another series of pileups involving 15 vehicles about 10 miles to the east shut down the turnpike's westbound lanes near Sandusky.
