DETROIT (AP) — The author of a controversial study of young adults whose mom or dad had a same-sex relationship has defended his work while testifying for the state of Michigan in a trial over its gay marriage ban.
University of Texas sociologist Mark Regnerus has been under fire since 2012 when he reported that children in that category had more problems than children raised by stable heterosexual couples.
Two Detroit-area women are challenging Michigan's ban on same-sex marriage, which was approved by voters in 2004.
The American Psychological Association says there's no scientific basis for believing that gays and lesbians are unfit parents based on sexual orientation.
Regnerus testified Monday that the issue of family stability in same-sex households is unsettled. He says firm conclusions require years of additional data.
