NY jury selection starts for bin Laden son-in-law

NEW YORK (AP) — Jury selection is scheduled to start Monday for the New York trial of Osama bin Laden's son-in-law on charges he conspired to kill Americans as al-Qaida's spokesman after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Sulaiman Abu Ghaith (SOO'-lay-mahn AH'-boo GAYTH) will be tried in a courthouse just blocks from where the attacks downed the World Trade Center in 2001. Security will be tight: spectators will be required to go through metal-detector machines.

Judge Lewis Kaplan refused on Friday to delay the trial amid claims by defense lawyers that their client has been mistaken for a Guantanamo Bay detainee in regards to some evidence.

Evidence to be introduced includes propaganda videos in which Abu Ghaith sits with bin Laden. Jurors also will hear FBI witnesses describe what he told them.
