Bird strike leads plane to make emergency landing

GRAPEVINE, Texas (AP) — An American Airlines flight returned to Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport for an emergency landing after its crew reported the jet hit a bird on takeoff.

The Federal Aviation Administration reports American Airlines Flight 1188 landed safely Friday night after its crew reported the bird strike. The MD-80 jet was flying from DFW to Reagan National Airport in Washington, D.C.

In a statement, the FAA said the return was a precautionary measure. The FAA says American Airlines crews are inspecting the aircraft for damage.

The number of passengers aboard the aircraft wasn't immediately available. A message left with American Airlines wasn't returned Friday night.
