Pot industry faces growing limits in Tucson area

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — Medical marijuana dispensaries faced with municipalities' limits on sizes of growing operations in the Tucson area are turning to Phoenix instead.

The Arizona Daily Star (http://bit.ly/1hD0iUC ) reports that cultivation in the Tucson area is limited to 2,000 or 3,000 square feet, depending on the jurisdiction.

Industry consultant Dimitri Downing says that means the jobs associated with growing medical marijuana are going to the Phoenix area, where much larger facilities are permitted and opening.

Deputy County Attorney Tom Rankin says the limits imposed by Pima County make sense for the number of medical marijuana users involved.

Tucson Planning and Development Director Ernie Duarte says Tucson wanted to keep cultivation sites small but left it open to expand later. He says there are no plans to do that.
