Official: US expelling 3 Venezuelan diplomats

By By LUIS ALONSO LUGO

WASHINGTON (AP) — A U.S. official says the United States is expelling three Venezuelan diplomats in response to last week's expulsion of three U.S. consular officials from Caracas.

The official did not identify the diplomats being expelled, but said Tuesday they have three days to leave the country. The official spoke on condition of anonymity for lack of authorization to speak about the case.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro last week expelled three U.S. consular officials, saying they were supporting opposition plots to overthrow him.

The two countries have not exchanged ambassadors since 2010, though they have maintained embassies.
