Syphilis, gonorrhea cases rising in North Dakota

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota's Health Department says cases of sexually transmitted diseases are on the rise in the state.

The number of confirmed syphilis cases has risen from 15 to 24 since 2012, and the number of gonorrhea cases has climbed from 340 to 471 in the same time period.

Lindsey VanderBusch with the Health Department's Division of Disease Control says state officials are trying to raise awareness not only among the public but among doctors. The department is contacting physicians throughout the state to remind them to be on the lookout for STD symptoms when they see patients.
