No parole chance, ex-soldier hangs self in cell

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — An ex-soldier facing life in prison with no chance at parole hanged himself in his Arizona prison cell and left no note to explain why.

Steven Dale Green, of Midland, Texas, took his own life Saturday, years after a federal jury spared him a death sentence in the 2006 attack on the teenage Iraqi girl and the shotgun slaying of her mother, father and younger sister near Mahmoudiya (mahk-moo-DEE'-ah), Iraq.

Three other ex-soldiers are serving lengthy sentences in the military prison at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., for roles in the attack. Each is eligible for parole in 2015.

One of Green's civilian attorneys, Darren Wolff, said the prospect of decades in prison with no possibility of getting out while co-conspirators have an eventual chance at parole took its toll on Green.
