BECKLEY, W.Va. (AP) — The University of Charleston plans to establish an associate degree nursing program at its Beckley campus.
The program would fill a void left by the closure of Mountain State University. The University of Charleston took over Mountain State's campuses in Beckley and Martinsburg on Jan. 1, 2013, after Mountain State lost its accreditation.
Regional president Jerry Forster tells media outlets that the university has notified the West Virginia Board of Examiners for Registered Professional Nurses about its plan. The nursing program would require the board's approval.
Forster says hospital officials and community leaders have told the university that more nurses are needed in the Beckley area.
