Calif. Rep. Gary Miller will not seek re-election

LOS ANGELES (AP) — California Rep. Gary Miller will not seek re-election, opening an opportunity for Democrats in his inland district east of Los Angeles.

The Republican first elected in 1998 said in a statement Wednesday that he would serve out the remainder of his term in the 31st Congressional District.

He said "family circumstances" prompted his decision but did not elaborate.

Democrats considered Miller vulnerable this fall. His district, which includes the city of San Bernardino, has a 7-point Democratic registration edge.

He says in his statement that Congress should work on bipartisan solutions to provide opportunities for Americans.
